The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in Las Vegas introduces its latest exhibition celebrating the world of boxing through art and running May 21 until August 22.
Works inspired by the world of boxing are the subject of the exhibition, Leather Throwers, which surveys how visual artists have incorporated images and personalities of the world of boxing into sculptures, paintings, drawings and photographs. Titled after a drawing by Ed Ruscha, the show includes works by leading post-war giants Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, who famously created a mock boxing poster featuring the two artists. Contemporary artists Gary Simmons and Jeffrey Gibson have incorporated images of the boxing rings and transformed punching bags, respectively, into their critically recognized bodies of work.
Shown in conversation with these important artworks is ephemera from boxing’s history in Las Vegas. Photographs, playbills and rare materials detail seminal moments in the city and tell the story of the sport politically, socially and visually and how it relates to a young but quickly growing entertainment capital.
